Home Safety Inspection

Is your home safe? Use this checklist to inspect your home for potential hazards.

  • Move furniture blocking easy passage exits.
  • Check for electric cords under rugs and move so that people do not walk over them.
  • The following items should be out of reach of children:
    • Matches
    • Medicines
    • Cleaning fluids and any other poisons
    • Knives
    • Tools
    • Curtain cords
  • Flammable products such as paint, weed killers, etc. should be stored away from heat sources.
  • Remove items from stairs that people can trip over.
  • Oily rags should be stored in closed metal cans.
  • Stair handrails should be fastened securely.
  • Test smoke detectors and change batteries at least once a year.
  • Large objects should only be stored on lower shelves.
  • Check for frayed electrical cords.
  • Move electric appliances away from sinks, bathtubs, toilets or other water sources.
  • Sandboxes and pools(even wading pools) should be covered when not in use. Toilet lid closed when not in use.
  • Replace burned out light bulbs.
  • Hang pictures and mirrors away from beds.
  • Check temperature on water heater.
  • Fire extinguishers are fully charged.
